Pre-Conference - Introduction to GeoSpectrum Lessons and the Interactive GeoInquiry Map
In Wyoming, GIS professionals and Professional Land Surveyors have a passion for their work, yet they recognize the lack of understanding for the work they do and a need for more people seeking these professions in the future. In collaboration with the Wyoming Board of Education, Professional Land Surveyors of Wyoming, University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and WYGEO, an outreach effort is underway that will pilot an opportunity for professionals in these fields to visit 3rd – 12th grade classrooms and facilitate learning opportunities utilizing a web-based GeoInquiry interactive map and GeoSpectrum lesson plans currently in development. These lessons support Wyoming state standards in math, science, technology, and social studies and offer authentic opportunities for students to participate in real-world activities that utilize STEM initiatives. This session will include an introduction to the map and current lesson plans, suggestions for implementing these tools in different grade levels and contents, time for participants to explore the map and plans, and an opportunity to provide feedback on this outreach effort. Participants, please bring a laptop, if possible.

Pre-Conference - Professional Development: Practices and Strategies to Expedite Academic Growth, Access and Equity for English Learner Students
English language learners, struggling students, children of poverty, and new immigrants must participate in a full and rich curriculum. Too often we find English language learners enrolled in programs limited to English as a Second Language, English Language Arts, remedial reading practices, and remedial math classes. Issues of inequality often begin with placement decisions that are based on reading abilities, but may neglect to look at other factors. What practices should staff implement that are best known to expedite the achievement of English learners and other struggling students? Key evidence-based strategies that expedite the acquisition of academic vocabulary, improve reading comprehension, and writing practices across content areas will be reviewed. This session will be interactive.

Pre-Conference Parent Engagement, Participation, and Partnerships
Do your district's or school's practices reflect parent engagement, parent participation, parent partnerships, or all of the above? Do you have clearly articulated goals and expectations for the involvement of parents? These two questions, simple as they may seem, if not clearly stated practices often create disappointments and conflicts for both school personnel and parents. Successful experiences that result in both satisfied parents and staff along with positive impacts on student achievement take careful planning articulation of well-defined goals. Examples of successful practices and procedures will be shared with the attendees.
