Dr. Maria N. Trejo is an expert national and international consultant in reading and English as a second language for struggling students and adults; has a unique expertise in working with parent groups and advisory committees; and in the area of mathematics.

Maria served as an expert consultant and state Coordinator for the English Learner Roadmap Project (2016-17) at the California State Department of Education, sponsored by the CDE ‘Foundation’ and the Sobrato Family Foundation – a state initiative to provide strategic planning support and policy direction for local education agencies.

She has provided expertise to the US Department of Education (Office of Civil Rights) and the US Department of Justice with district issues on areas of equity and access.
She is a senior trainer-consultant and coach for Calderon and Associates, implementing Reading Instructional Goals or Older Readers (RIGOR) and Expediting Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL), ExC-ELL for Newcomers, and ExC-Elito for Pre-K-2 grades. She has consulted and trained for Corwin Press, Solution Tree, and Benchmark publications. She has done training for SIOP for the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL).

Dr. Trejo began her career teaching various K-12 grades, including three years as a high school mathematics teacher, and working in teacher colleges preparing future teachers.
Dr. Trejo provided leadership and support to districts and schools during her 32-year tenure with the California State Department of Education. She was assistant superintendent and administrator for a variety of programs in all grade spans, including preschool programs.
Twenty years were devoted to administering major state and national programs that required parental and community participation. The involvement included social, educational, and legal functions. Issues of equity, justice, and education guided the conversations and decisions involving parents and community members. She led cross-cultural delegations and represented the State of California in various countries.

Dr. Trejo has contributed to a variety of publications:
-        Preschool English Learners: Principles and Practices to Promote Language, Literacy, and Learning (PEL Resource Guide), 2008-2009, -   California Preschool Curriculum Framework, Volume 1; 
-        Oxford Press for the Oxford Picture Dictionary for the Content Areas; Vocabulary Games for the Classroom by Lindsay Carleton and Robert J. Marzano.
-        Teaching Reading & Comprehension to English Learners, K-5, by Margarita Calderon (2011),
-        Breaking Through: Effective Instruction & Assessment for Reaching English Learners (2012), and 
-        Literacy Strategies for English Learners in Core Content Secondary Classrooms (2016)
-        Pending,  “Financial Literacy and Mathematics for Teenagers”.
Her last ten years have provided her the opportunity to work various US states such as Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Puerto Rico, Massachusetts, Arizona, Baltimore, North Carolina, New York, New Mexico, Virginia, and Philadelphia. Lately, she has also worked with California districts in Merced, Tulare, Val Valle, Turlock, and Los Banos.

Maria has presented at national, state, and international conferences in Quito, Ecuador, Spain, Costa Rica, China, South Korea, Germany, France, and Mexico. She established models for international teacher training and recruitment agreements with Spain, South Korea, and Mexico. Maria has extensive experience serving in national, state and community organizations, commissions, boards and task forces. She most recently served on the Board of Directors for the California Kindergarten Association.
